San Diego Botanic Garden
If you’re looking for things to do in Encinitas, California, you should visit the San Diego Botanic Garden. Located off Quail Gardens Drive, this beautiful garden is home to a breathtaking variety of plant life. It features a four-mile-long trail that includes tropical and subtropical flora and even a bamboo grove! Featuring a variety of flowering trees and vistas, this garden is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Encinitas.
Nearby is the Self-Realization Fellowship temple. The sanctuary was founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, the author of the book Autobiography of a Yogi. Visitors are required to handle the topiary with care as the garden’s animals are living, so they must be treated with respect. The temple’s other attractions are the Self-Realization Fellowship and Hermitage and Retreat Center.
A tour of the garden is recommended and includes a stop at the Encinitas Historical Society. Located in an old schoolhouse, the 1883 Schoolhouse features exhibits, artifacts, and photos of the city’s history. The Encinitas Historical Society appreciates donations to keep the museum open. They are open Saturdays and Sundays and are closed Mondays.
For those looking for a spiritual retreat, the Self-Realization Fellowship Hermitage is a must-see in Encinitas. Its gardens have been designated a spiritual retreat for people who want to connect with nature and heal themselves. The Hermitage also features a bookstore. During your visit to the Encinitas Botanic Garden, you can relax and unwind after exploring the garden.
If you’re looking for an activity with a history component, you can check out the History Center Museum, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm. There’s no admission fee, but you’re encouraged to leave a donation if you like. The museum is open every day from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5 pm, though some days are closed for special events. The Museum of Photographic Arts also hosts photography and film festivals. Located next to the San Diego Botanic Garden, this museum is a great place for a family outing.
In addition to the botanical garden, a hidden gem of Encinitas is the Spruce Street suspension bridge. This bridge features a carillon. A carillon is a set of bells housed in a tower. If you’re lucky enough to see one, you can run a stick along the railing and listen to the bells ringing their theme song. Main Information Page here.
